I’m a Lovely Flower with an Odd-sounding Name

Perennial of the Week: Scabiosa – ‘Pincushion Flower’

Never mind its odd-sounding name: Scabiosa produces lovely blue, lavender, lilac, or cream-colored flowers that are a visual delight in the garden bed and in cut flower arrangements. Scabiosa appreciates a good deadheading, and will bloom all the more afterward, so feel free to bring some indoors. You’ll love the delicately ruffled petals that surround the pincushion-shaped center that led to the moniker “Pincushion Flower.”

Don’t be put off by this plant’s Latin name. Like several members of the Honeysuckle family that were used to treat the illness known as scabies, Pincushion Flower inherited a variant of the name “Scabious.”

A compact, mounding perennial, Scabiosa grows best in well-drained soil in full sun or light shade. Its nectar-rich flowers attract butterflies and moths, and enhance the appeal of cottage gardens, rock gardens, and borders.

Even after its flowers drop, Scabiosa continues to delight. As the blooms finish, the calyces and bracts form a spiky ball that adds texture to the landscape.

Bonus: Scabiosa is deer resistant.

We are currently growing Butterfly Blue, Pink Mist, and Scabiosa japonica (an alpine variety). Visit us today and see how you can put this versatile perennial to work in your garden.
