The Joy of June

What’s in the Garden:

Opportunities to celebrate – and take photos in your yard — abound throughout this lovely month. June is Perennial Gardening Month and brings proms, graduations, weddings, Flag Day, that all-important first day of summer, and Father’s Day. Everyone will be spending more time outdoors, so make sure your yard is company ready!

ADK Style

AdirondackFire2An Adirondack chair is a perfect addition to any outdoor space. Bring some ADK style to your yard with one of these comfortable, classic, Amish-made chairs. Ours are available in Eucalyptus, Western Cedar, Teak, and maintenance-free Poly. In fact, our Poly ADK chairs come in a dazzling array of lively colors. Styles include Fanback, Kennebunkport, and Lodge.

Those of us who like to stay out until “owl time” may want to invest in a chiminea or fire pit. Imagine your friends and family pulling up their chairs around one of these warm, wonderful focal points. When they are not in use, the chiminea or fire pit will add visual interest to your landscape. Not to rush the season… but when the evenings get cool again, you’ll still be able to enjoy your outdoor living space.

Two Tough, Rohsler’s Grown Reliable PerennialsPOW-Blog

Lambs’ Ears and Penstemon are now sharing the stage as Perennials of the Week!

Add Penstemon/Beardtongue, a North American native, to your garden this summer. We’ve made it easier for you by making it one of the Perennials of the Week.

Are you a beginner in the garden? Try one of our forgiving Stachys varieties. This genus of plants includes the well-loved fuzzy Lambs’ Ears and beautiful flowering Betony. Stachys is also 20% off (5 pint pots and larger).

Tropicals Add Atmosphere

Our tropical plants, including Hibiscus, Mandevilla, Bougainvillea, Jasmine, and Lantana, have been extremely popular of late. With their exotic colors and foliage, these tropical accents make a deck, patio, or pool area look well decorated for the summer season. All you have to do is choose…

A Passion for Pollinators

HummingbirdFuchsiaIn the past week, dozens of gardeners have been asking about the plants that attract hummingbirds and butterflies.

In general, the Ruby-throated Hummingbird (New Jersey’s only regularly-occurring species) seeks out tube-shaped flowers – and particularly favors those that are red. Salvia, Lantana, Agastache, Fuchsia, Cardinal Flower, and Native Honeysuckle are excellent options.

On June 9, Bergen County Audubon Society President Don Torino will be at Rohsler’s to discuss ways to attract butterflies to your garden. He will also cover the importance of Milkweed to the Monarch’s existence. His program will begin at 7 p.m. Attendees will receive special pricing on plants the night of the presentation.

There is Still Time to Plant Veggies, Herbs, & Berries

blueberryBushesIf you have not yet had time to plant your vegetable garden or veggie and herb container gardens there is still ample time. Rohsler’s still has an amazing selection of veggie and herb plants. We are now offering our customers USDA Certified Organic herbs and veggies. We also have a large assortment of berry plants for your traditional Berry Patch or in “edible” landscapes or containers.

“Foodscaping”– the integration of edible plants into a homeowner’s landscape — has become a popular trend. Give this trend a try by adding Blueberries or Elderberries to your yard.
