Timely Tips for Fall

What’s in the Garden:

Autumn is here! While it may be bittersweet to say goodbye to summer, fall is an excellent time to be out in the garden.

fertilizingThis is an ideal time to renovate a tired thin lawn, address bare spots, or install a whole new lawn. We recommend applying a fall fertilizer or an organic fertilizer now to thicken an existing lawn and develop a strong root system this winter leading into the spring.

This is a perfect time to seed or sod your lawn. Thatching the lawn with a Cavex rake or a mechanized power rake would be highly beneficial as the seed being sown will have direct contact with the soil. Core aeration can also be performed to alleviate compacted soil and set the stage for fall seeding. Gypsum is also recommended for high traffic compacted soils.

Top dressing the bare ground with some organically enriched topsoil or a compost such as Bumper Crop is recommended prior to seeding.

For a long-lasting lawn, you’ll need to select the proper seed. The key to making the right choice is the amount of sunlight your yard receives.grass-seed

Rohsler’s can help guide you through the entire lawn renovation process.

Turf type Tall Fescue seed is great for high traffic turf areas and lawns that are typically under drought stress. Liming the lawn can also be advantageous where soils are low in pH/acidic.

After seeding, apply Penn Mulch/Seed Accelerator or salt hay. This will hasten germination, keep the seed in place during rainfall and irrigation, and discourage birds from feeding on the seed.

Keeping the seed correctly moistened is a must for good germination.

September is an excellent time to sod large bare spots or install a new lawn.

Amending/preparing the ground with proper topsoil or compost along with a starter fertilizer will produce much better long-lasting results.sedum
