Edibles from Cilantro to Rumex
What’s in the Garden:
Are you looking forward to Mums, Asters, and Pumpkins? Great – but don’t fast-forward past the edibles that brighten and deepen the flavors of so many favorite dishes.
Our selection of herbs currently includes Sweet Basil, Chives, Dill, Greek Oregano, Curled and Italian Parsley, Thyme, and Calypso Cilantro, which is known for being relatively slow to bolt.
We even have a selection of herb bowls that are planted with a mixture of various herbs, including Chives, Sage, Barbecue Rosemary, Nutmeg Thyme, Hyssop, and the Dittany of Crete form of Oregano. These make great gifts for chefs and gardeners.
Consult your recipes before you visit us so you’ll be sure to get the right amount of herbs for now and later. Of course, some herbs can easily be dried or frozen for future use. If you prefer, make a double batch of your favorite herb-infused recipe and freeze some of the prepared food for a rainy (dare we say snowy?) day.
This spring, many of our customers mentioned that they were growing edibles as a way to educate their children about the process involved in bringing food to the table. We’ll help to fuel that trend now and in the coming weeks with vegetable transplants ready to be planted for fall harvest, and the heirloom varieties and new hybrids of Beets, Broccoli, Swiss Chard, Lettuce and Kale that already have arrived. You can also choose Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, red or green Onions, Leeks, Collards, Cauliflower, and more.
If you haven’t heard, Cauliflower is now being used in some ingenious, gluten-free pizza “crust” recipes!
Tender, delicious Lettuce mixes are also available. Check out our Wildfire Mix, the Mild Mesclun Mix, the Five Star Greenhouse Mix, or the Buttercrunch or the Allstar Gourmet Mix.
Now for a word about Rumex: Part of the Buckwheat family that includes Docks and Sorrels, Rumex is a perennial herb with edible leaves. We now have a variety known as “Raspberry Dressing” that tastes a bit like Spinach, but has a decidedly lemony flavor. See? It’s really not so mysterious!
We also recommend planting fruit trees and berries now. Fall is an excellent time for plants to establish a strong root system that will give them a head start next spring, leading to greater yields.
