Summerific Week Has Arrived!
August 2-8, 2026 is Summerific® Week, a national celebration of the spectacular Summerific® Hardy Hibiscus collection from Proven Winners® Perennials. If you’ve ever stopped in your tracks to admire a hibiscus flower the size of a dinner plate, this week is for you.
With massive blooms, pollinator benefits, and incredible garden performance, Summerific® Hibiscus has become one of the most beloved late-summer perennials. At Rohsler’s, we’re excited to showcase three of our favorite varieties: Cookies and Cream, Berry Awesome, and Garnet Globes.
Why Gardeners Love Summerific® Hibiscus
Summerific® Hibiscus combines tropical-looking flowers with the hardiness New Jersey gardeners need. Unlike tropical hibiscus that must be brought indoors for winter, Summerific® varieties are hardy perennial hibiscus, returning year after year and thriving in USDA Zones 4-9.
These impressive plants produce enormous flowers up to 8 inches wide and can grow rapidly during the summer season. Better yet, they’re descended primarily from Hibiscus moscheutos, a North American native species found naturally in wetlands and along riverbanks throughout the eastern United States.
That native heritage makes them more than just beautiful. Summerific® Hibiscus provides an important late-season food source for native bees and other pollinators when many other flowers have finished blooming.
More Flowers, Longer Bloom Time
One of the most unique features of the Summerific® collection is what’s known as indeterminate blooming. Unlike many hibiscus that flower only at the tips of their stems, Summerific® varieties produce buds all along the stem, resulting in more flowers, earlier blooms, and stunning top-to-bottom flower coverage.
The result? Weeks of spectacular color right when gardens need it most.
Growing Tips for Success
Summerific® Hibiscus thrives when provided with:
Full Sun
The more sun these plants receive, the stronger their stems, the richer their foliage color, and the more flowers they’ll produce.
Consistent Moisture
These plants naturally descend from species found near wetlands and riverbanks, so they appreciate regular watering and even perform beautifully in rain gardens or periodically wet areas.
A Little Patience in Spring
Summerific® Hibiscus is famously late to emerge each spring. Don’t worry. They’re not dead! Once warm weather arrives, they take off with remarkable growth, sometimes growing nearly an inch a day.
Room to Grow
Mature plants can reach 5 to 6 feet wide, so be sure to give them plenty of space to shine.
